Watch Band Measuring Guide
What is Watch Band Size?
The size of a watch band (or strap) is determined by the width of the band end that connects to the watch. Since watches come in various sizes, the width of the watch strap can differ as well. To find the correct watch band size for your watch, you need to measure the lug width—the distance between the inside edges of the watch’s lugs (as shown in the diagram below).
How to Determine Your Watch Band Size

If you already have a leather band on your watch, check the back of the band for a size imprint, typically shown in millimeters. If the size isn’t indicated, you’ll need to measure the lug width yourself. Here are three simple methods to do so:
Method 1: Digital Calipers
This is the most accurate way to measure your lug width. Insert the calipers between the lugs and expand them to get an exact measurement.
Rounding Tip: When replacing a watch band, it’s generally better for the band to be snug rather than loose. If you need to round your measurement, it’s usually best to round up. Leather, rubber, or nylon straps can flex slightly to accommodate.
Method 2: Standard Ruler
Use a ruler to measure the distance between the lugs. If you measure in inches, convert the result to millimeters using the conversion chart below. The same rounding rules as above apply.
Method 3: Printable Measuring Gauge
Use our free printable gauge or postcard (as shown to the right). Before printing, ensure you uncheck any “fit to page” or scaling options so the gauge prints true to size. The same rounding rules apply.
By following these steps, you’ll ensure you find the perfect fit for your watch band.
Common Lug Widths by Brand
Once you know your measurement, you can shop by brand. These are the most common sizes for popular models, but always check your own watch, because widths vary between references.
- Rolex: 20mm for the classic Submariner, Daytona, GMT-Master and Datejust 36; 21mm for newer 41mm models.
- Omega: 20mm for most Seamaster and Speedmaster models; 22mm for larger Planet Ocean cases.
- Panerai: 22mm for 42mm cases, 24mm for 44mm Luminor and Marina, 26mm for 47mm cases.
- Breitling: mostly 22mm and 24mm for the Avenger, Navitimer and Superocean.
- IWC: 20 to 22mm for pilot’s watches and the Portugieser.
- TAG Heuer: mostly 22mm for the Carrera, Monaco and Aquaracer.
- Tudor: 22mm for the Black Bay and Pelagos.
- Tissot: 19mm to 23mm depending on the model; the PRX uses an integrated 26x12mm fitting.
Watches with integrated straps
Some watches do not use standard lugs, so a lug-width measurement alone is not enough. The Patek Philippe Nautilus and Aquanaut, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, Hublot and Richard Mille all need a strap shaped to the case. For these, choose the strap by model reference, which we list in every product title.
